Hunger Strike on University Square
Anti-Communist hunger strikers protest in Bucharest's University Square before the Romanian national elections in May 1990. Flying above the protesters is a Romanian flag with a hole where the coat of arms of Communist Romania has been cut out. Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was overthrown and executed in December 1989, and protesters demand that his successor Iliescu and other Communist Party officials should not be allowed to compete in the free elections.
