Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Announces Lawsuit Against US Justice Department

CHICAGO, IL - AUGUST 06: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (L), Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Eddie Johnson (C) and Chicago Corporation Counsel Ed Siske arrive to announce during a press conference that on Monday the City of Chicago will file a federal lawsuit to try to prevent President Donald Trump and the U.S. Justice Department from making a federal crime prevention grant conditional on immigration enforcement policies on August 6, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. The mayor specifically cited applications for the Justice Department's Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant which provides federal funding to support local law enforcement efforts. Conditions of the grant will require local sharing of immigration status information, unlimited access to local police stations and law enforcement facilities by U.S. Department of Homeland Security personnel to interrogate arrestees, and the requirement that cities provide DHS with at least a 48-hour notice prior to an arrestee's release from jail.
