General view of the Eleanor Cross monument, outside Charing Cross railway station, in central London following a 10 month restoration project.The monument was erected in 1865, to replace one that was less ornate and was destroyed in 1647, during the English Civil War. The original monument was one of several erected across the country to mark the twelve nightly resting places of the body of Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of the English King Edward I, during her last journey from Lincoln Cathedral to Westminster Abbey.
