The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular in Nepal. Commencing most commonly from Lukla Airport (or traditionally from Jiri) it is a long and arduous trek taking around 12-16 days all at high altitude. The end point is Everest Base Camp (South side) which is used during the climbing season (May and October) as the main camp of the climbing expeditions to Mt Everest. The Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass variation is a popular one, it takes in the lakes in the Gokyo Valley and continues through the Cho La Pass before rejoining the Everest Base Camp trail. Mount Everest, Sanskrit and Nepali Sagarmatha, Tibetan Chomolungma, mountain on the crest of the Great Himalayas of southern Asia that lies on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, at 27°59′ N 86°56′ E. Reaching an elevation of 29,035 feet (8,850 metres), Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. The mountain and its surrounding valleys lie within Sagarmatha National Park, a 480-square-mile (1,243-square-km) zone established in 1976. In 1979 the park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and is situated in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal.
