Senator Flake Opening Statement at Gorsuch Confirmation Hearing

Arizona Senator Jeff Flake says on the first day of the confirmation hearing for Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court that one of the most consequential decisions a President will make is who they nominate to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court. Flake says that Justice Scalia demonstrated just how much one Justice could influence the trajectory of the Supreme Court, that Scalia did it with a textualist approach to statutes. Flake says that he was impressed with his respect for the law and commitment to service. Flake says that Gorsuch decides cases on what the law says, not who the parties are, that Gorsuch has cautioned against encroachment on the People's civil liberties.
