Prince Charles visit to Camp Bastion; Prince Charles interview SOT - Today met Governor of Helmand Province and met some elders, was a great opportunity to talk to them about the way they view current situation and what local people feel about role of British forces... Extraordinary role played by our armed forces, not just military, but aid to the civil power, starting water supply, building schools... That bit is often missed out - Combination, a lot of partnership going on with mentoring Afghan National Army and police / Met a lot of our military people doing that brilliantly, our forces benefit from the local knowledge and awareness of Afghan National Army so works both ways / Crucial importance of hearing what local people feel about issues, security and justice issues are of huge importance to them, got some idea of that, business of how you empower local communities and work with the grain of the local culture ... - It's a very worrying time for all the families when loved ones are out here, particularly the Rifles have been having a bloody awful time in Sangin, heart goes out to all of them and their families, we're standing here with memorial in background to all those people who have given their lives for this country, elders expressed immense appreciation for the fact they have died for this country.... When my youngest son was out here as parent you worry the whole time.... Families are the most wonderful support to their loved ones, that is what they do so magnificently, we're very lucky indeed, so many families, have 2 or 3 sons in the armed forces, incredible, and go on for several generations, makes me incredibly proud of what they do out here
